The Union government offers financial and other required assistance to the poor and lower-income families or individuals across the nation through various welfare schemes. A family or individual could be eligible to get benefits for one or more schemes. However, a lack of awareness lowers the chances of a person or a family getting what they are eligible for.  Below are some social welfare schemes for lower-income families or individuals.    

Best Government Schemes For Low-Income Families In India

Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY)

Ayushman Bharat is one of the most beneficial schemes for lower-income families. It provides cashless health cover up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year, if a person from the family requires hospitalisation for secondary and tertiary care. One of the key features of the scheme is that it covers pre-existing diseases from day one and provides free health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 plus via Vay Vandana cards. 

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY)

The scheme was launched during the COVID-19 period to help poor, lower-middle-class families, providing 5 kg of free foodgrains (rice or wheat) per person per month to over 80 crore beneficiaries. The scheme is still helping the lower-income group in rural and urban areas.  

The best thing about the welfare scheme is that it operates under the One Nation One Ration Card (ONORC) system, which allows migrant workers to get benefits anywhere in India.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana ( Gramin / Urban)

Under PM Awas Yojna  (PMAY 2.0 ), the government provide financial assistance of Rs 1.2 lakh in plain areas and Rs 1.3 lakh in hilly areas to construct a concrete (Pucca) house to families having lower income. 

The PMAY 2.0, which is under operation, has an objective to build 3 crore additional houses with basic needs like clean toilets. 

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

It is one of the revolutionary scheme that bring ease to lower-income group households, providing deposit-free LPG gas connections to head women of families belonging to low-income and BPL households. 

Additionally, beneficiaries get financial assistance for the first cylinder refill cost and the stove.

VB-GRAM G (Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin)

The scheme, which was earlier known as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), guarantees at least 100 days of wage employment for members of poor and lower-income families in rural areas. 

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)

This scheme brings crores of poor and lower-income people under the banking framework, providing basic, zero-balance savings bank accounts with a free RuPay debit card. 

Additionally, account holders were given an overdraft limit of  Rs 10,000 and standard Rs 2 lakh accidental insurance cover.

PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN)

As many as 70 per cent of Indian households are still associated with Agriculture.  The PM Kisan Scheme provides a support of Rs 6,000 per year to small and marginal farmers. The amount is hit linked to the bank account in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000. Key Feature. 

It helps farmer families to mitigate seasonal household expenses. 

Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM)

The scheme guarantees a minimum assured monthly pension of Rs 3,000 to workers of unorganised sectors after they attain the age of 60. This person has to contribute, and any person aged between 18 and 40 can start contributing. The government matches monthly contributions 50:50. 

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana 

The scheme aims to deliver up to 300 units of free electricity per month to 1 crore low-to-middle-income households by offering subsidies up to Rs 78,000 for installing rooftop solar panels. This heavily slashes the monthly power utility costs.
