Air India Group on Tuesday announced the implementation of a significant revision in fuel surcharges for both domestic and international flights, following a sharp rise in jet fuel prices globally. The revision will take place from Wednesday, April 8, for most routes; however, the revised surcharge for flights to Europe, Australia, and North America will apply from April 10, 2026.
"Following the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas' and Ministry of Civil Aviation's decision to cap domestic Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) price hike at 25%, Air India group is reflecting this calibrated approach, transitioning from a flat domestic surcharge to a distance‑based grid as follows, effective 08 April 2026," the Airline's official note said.
Distance-Based Fuel Surcharge For Domestic Routes
The Tata Group owned Airline has rolled out a distance-based fuel surcharge hike instead of a flat increase in prices.

501 to 1000 Kilometres- Rs 399
1001 to 1500 Kilometres- Rs 549
1501 to 2000 Kilometres- Rs 749
Above 2000 Kilometres- Rs 899

- For Flight to West Asia- $50
- China and Southeast Asia (excluding Singapore) - $100
- Singapore - $60
- Africa- $130

The fuel charges in international routes ---Africa, China, Singapore, the Middle East and SAARC nations-- will be applicable from April 8, while for Europe, North America and Australia, the new charges will be implemented from April 10.
No Extra Charge On Existing Booking
For those who must be in doubt, if the fuel surcharge will be levied on existing bookings or already bought tickets, the Airline said tickets that have already been issued before the above times will not attract the new surcharge. Howeverm if customers seek date or itinerary changes, the charges will be applicable.
ATF Price Hike In Global Market
According to the latest data from the International Air Transport Organisation, the global average price of kerosene stood at $195.19 per barrel for the week ended March 27, compared with $99.40 at the end of February, registering an almost 100% increase.
"At the same time, in the absence of any such mitigations on international ATF prices, the Air India group will be implementing more significant changes to fuel surcharges as below," the Airline said.
