E25 Petrol:  India’s ethanol-blended petrol (EBP) program has remained a point of discussion across the country. While social media is flooded with misinformation, memes, and fake videos about it, several vehicle owners have alleged engine damage from E20 petrol. The government has clarified several such concerns in the parliament recently. Notably, India has achieved its E20 goals ahead of the deadline, and the government is testing the next stage of ethanol-blended fuel standards.

Government On E-25

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting recently shared a post on X about E-25 petrol. The ministry has shared a video from E-25 testing, with a caption that read ‘E-25 is still in testing, and India will take the next step only after every engine, fuel system and safety check is validated by science.’ The video shared by the ministry also mentions that ‘Once the science is completed, only then the next step will be taken’.

What Is E-25 Petrol?

E-25 is a rating given to a blended fuel type with 75 per cent petrol and 25 per cent ethanol content. The government began the rollout of E-20 petrol in April 2023, and its sale across the country was made mandatory from April 2026 onwards. Currently, all petrol products sold in India are available with a blend of 20 per cent ethanol. The government has already been preparing for further stages of the country’s EBP. The govt scrapped excise duty on fuel blend standards ranging from E-22 to E-30 in June 2026.

No Engine Damage

The concerns around E-20 petrol have also reached the parliament, and the government has responded to several genuine concerns around the topic. Suresh Gopi, the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, cited service data of 23 crore vehicles running on E-20 fuel and shared that no evidence of widespread engine failure or breakdown can be attributed to E-20 petrol. Citing a government study and service data, the minister also shared that a drop in fuel efficiency ranging from 3 to 5 per cent can be attributed to E-20 petrol, but mileage itself depends on several other factors, including driving style, tyre pressure, vehicle maintenance, and more.
