Ants In Car Fuel Tank Viral Video: India has achieved its E20 fuel target ahead of time, and the government is pushing for higher ethanol blends in the country. Official regulations for E100 fuel were recently approved by the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari. While the move is being seen as a huge leap in India’s biofuel journey, it has also triggered memes, rumours, and genuine confusion on social media. A video featuring ants swarming the fuel tank of a car was recently shared on social media, genuinely raising the query: Does ethanol-blended fuel really attract ants? Here’s the truth.
Ants In Car Fuel Tank: Viral Video
A video featuring the fuel tank of a car was recently shared on the social media platform Instagram. The video went viral among the ongoing rumours about E20 fuel. Ants can be seen swarming the fuel cap of the car in the video. As per the caption of the viral video, the users have claimed that ants are highly attracted to the ‘sweet smell’ of ethanol fuel, and thus, they’re swarming the fuel tank where ethanol-blended fuel has been stored. Additionally, the user can be heard saying ‘E85’ in the video. The caption also mentions that the fuel tank shown in the video is of an E85 car.

Does Ethanol Petrol Attract Ants?
The short answer to this question is no, the ethanol-blended petrol doesn’t attract ants. Ethanol, as a laboratory chemical, can attract ants as it has a sweet smell that mimics fermented fruit. However, fuel-grade ethanol is completely different from pure ethanol, as it is highly distilled before it can be blended with fuel. During the distillation process, ethanol loses its residual sugars and smell. Now, as there is no smell or residual sugar, it cannot attract ants or any other insects.

Ants In Car Fuel Tank Viral Video: Claim Vs Truth
As mentioned earlier, the user who shared the video claims that the vehicle has E85 fuel in it. To begin with, the only E85 car in India was launched a few days back, and it is only commercially available for now. Moreover, fuel-grade ethanol doesn’t have any residual sugar or smell, so it cannot attract ants or any other insects. Lastly, the ants may have taken shelter in the fuel tank or may have swarmed the fuel tank seeking some warmth in the humid area. Thus, the video of ants swarming the fuel tank of a car cannot be true.
