Google has launched Gemini in Chrome for users in India, marking the expansion of its AI-powered browser assistant to more markets beyond its initial launch locations. The feature, which debuted in September 2025 though initially limited to certain regions, burrows Gemini deep inside the Chrome browser to assist users engaging with webpages using AI. At the same time, Google said it expanded support for eight major Indic languages, bringing the AI high five (India) years; some people from India can now access their cellphones in their native languages.

Gemini in Chrome Now Available in India

Google announced the rollout of the Gemini side panel in Google Chrome for users in India via a press release. The AI assistant will show up as a side panel on the right of the browser and can respond to queries related to the actively viewed webpage.

However, the Indian version does not currently include the Auto Browse feature. This tool enables Gemini to control the browser and perform tasks on behalf of the user. Google stated that Auto Browse is only available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in regions where the feature has been rolled out.

The company also confirmed that Gemini in Chrome will initially be available on desktop and iOS devices.

Powered by Gemini 3.1 AI Model

The AI assistant in Chrome runs on Google’s latest Gemini 3.1 AI model. The model powers the tool’s reasoning and intelligence capabilities, allowing it to generate contextual responses based on information from the webpage, its internal knowledge base, and the internet.

As part of the India launch, Gemini in Chrome now supports eight Indic languages:

- Hindi

- Bengali

- Gujarati

- Kannada

- Malayalam

- Marathi

- Telugu

- Tamil

“We're thrilled for India to be one of the first markets to experience this transformation after the US, underscoring the country's enthusiasm and potential for driving the future of AI and emerging technologies across the globe,” said Charmaine Dsilva, Director, Product Management for Chrome, Google.

How Gemini Works Inside Chrome

Users can access the AI assistant through the sparkle icon labelled “Ask Gemini” located at the top of the Chrome browser. Once activated, the side panel opens and allows users to ask questions related to the webpage content.

Gemini can also analyse information across multiple open tabs, helping users gather insights and answers more efficiently.

Additionally, the feature includes built-in Nano Banana 2 support, enabling users to generate or edit images directly within the side panel. It can even modify images that appear on a webpage without requiring manual uploads.

Google also confirmed that new security protections have been added to reduce risks such as prompt injection attacks.
