A new AI-powered music generation tool has been announced by Google for its Gemini app, expanding its creative AI capabilities. The feature allows users to generate short music clips using simple prompts powered by the company’s most advanced music model called Lyria 3. The update arrives amid growing debate around AI-generated music, originality, and copyright, with Google emphasising responsible use and creative expression rather than imitation.

Gemini App Gets AI Music Generation With Lyria 3

Google confirmed that users can now generate AI music directly within the Gemini app using the Lyria 3 model. The tool enables the creation of 30-second-long music clips across various genres and styles, complete with multilingual lyrics. Users can generate tracks using text prompts, images, or uploaded content.

In a blog post, Google explained, “Just describe an idea or upload a photo, like ‘a comical R&B slow jam about a sock finding their match’ and in a matter of seconds, Gemini will translate it into a high-quality, catchy track.” Users can also ask Gemini to take inspiration from uploaded material to further refine outputs.

Lyria 3 supports multiple languages, including English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese. Google added that cover art for generated tracks will be created using its Nano Banana AI model. The feature is available to all Gemini app users aged 18 and above.

Copyright, Originality, and AI Watermarking

Addressing copyright concerns, Google said all AI-generated tracks will include a SynthID AI watermark. The company stressed that Lyria 3 is “designed for original expression, not for mimicking existing artists.” This clarification comes as AI-generated music remains a contentious topic, with artists raising concerns over misuse, unauthorised training data, and monetisation via streaming platform manipulation.
