Mozilla is rolling out a new way for users to control how Firefox handles artificial intelligence. According to Mozilla, the browser will now have a centralised AI control centre with Firefox 148, where users can decide which AI tools they want on and which ones off. The update is intended to give users more visibility and control as AI increasingly infiltrates web browsing. Firefox users will also have the ability to opt out completely from both existing and new AI functions.

Centralised AI Control Hub in Firefox

Mozilla introduced the new feature in a blog post, noting that many browsers were turning on AI tools without providing clear options. These might include side-panel chatbots, automatic translations, or smart previews that pop up when users don’t want them to.

In Firefox 148, users will have an AI control centre where they can monitor and control all AI-powered tools in one place. Desktop users will get the update as of 24 February.

AI Features Users Can Enable or Disable

At launch, the control hub will allow users to manage five main AI features:

- Translations

- Alt text generation in PDFs

- AI-enhanced tab grouping

- Link previews

- Sidebar AI chatbot

The sidebar chatbot can be configured to use different services, including Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and Mistral’s Le Chat.

Option to Fully Opt Out of AI

Firefox users who prefer a traditional browsing experience will be able to disable all generative AI features. Mozilla confirmed that choosing this option will also automatically block any future AI tools added to the browser.

Mozilla said the goal is to give users freedom of choice rather than forcing AI features by default.

Mozilla’s Approach to AI

User choice is becoming more and more important as AI becomes part of everyday browsing, the company said. Firefox is hoping that by providing a centralised control system, it will differentiate itself from other browsers and services with AI built into them, letting users leave certain elements but not others.
