Microsoft has formally announced early details on its next-generation Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix. The hardware is likely to be the successor series of the current Xbox console generation and may reactivate a fundamental change in the gaming ecosystem. It’ll be able to run Xbox and PC games natively in the new device, potentially unifying Microsoft’s console and Windows gaming platforms into one hybrid experience. Further details will emerge in the coming months.
Microsoft’s Next-Gen Xbox: Project Helix
Asha Sharma, newly made Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, posted the news on X, where she confirmed that internally at Microsoft the next-gen Xbox has been dubbed Project Helix.
The upcoming console is designed to support games built for:
- Xbox consoles
- Windows PCs
This approach could allow players to run PC titles alongside games developed specifically for the Xbox platform, creating a unified gaming environment across devices.

A Hybrid Console-PC Gaming Experience
The hybrid console direction is in line with previous comments made by Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella. Late in 2025 as Nadella said that the company was hoping to “revisit” the traditional concept of separating consoles and PCs into different ecosystems.
He also speculated that the next Xbox will be a Windows-centered machine, departing from the “walled garden” approach typical of gaming consoles.
This vision seems to be reflected in Project Helix, which is said to combine the flexibility of PC gaming with the simplicity of a console.
Support for Multiple PC Game Storefronts
Reports indicate that the next-generation Xbox could support PC games from multiple storefronts right from launch.
These may include:
- Steam
- Epic Games Store
If confirmed, this would allow gamers to access a wider library of titles directly on the console without being limited to a single marketplace.

Expected Launch Timeline
Project Helix is expected to succeed Microsoft’s current generation of consoles.

A new console arriving around 2027 is reportedly in the works. Although Microsoft has not definitively committed to a specific launch date, internal documents reportedly put 2026 or 2027 as a “best-case scenario.”
More Details Expected at Game Developers Conference
It is expected that Microsoft will share more details on Project Helix at the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC). Sharma mentioned in her online post that she will be at the December event in San Francisco to talk with partners about the project.
