A San Francisco-based startup, Deveillance, has launched an artificial intelligence-powered anti-surveillance device that claims to shield nearby microphones from eavesdropping on conversations. Dubbed Spectre I, the portable tabletop device is a type of shimming tool that’s meant to warp audio picked up by microphones within its range with inaudible omnidirectional signals. The company markets the device as a Privacy Resistance solution to unwanted recording and ambush intelligence. Spectre I is available for pre-order now with deliveries scheduled to start in the second half of 2026.
Deveillance Spectre I: AI-Powered Microphone Jamming
First spotted by Android Authority, Deveillance CEO Aida Baradari announced Spectre I in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). She described it as “the first smart device to stop unwanted audio recording".
While audio jamming devices already exist, the company claims Spectre I stands out due to:
- Portable tabletop form factor
- AI-based detection of nearby microphones
- Power-efficient signal transmission
The device reportedly emits omnidirectional signals that are inaudible to humans but capable of disrupting audio recordings.

According to Deveillance, Spectre I can block microphones within a range of up to 2 metres.
The company states that the device “emits an inaudible signal that makes every microphone within range unable to capture intelligible audio.” While the exact mechanism has not been disclosed, the description suggests the use of ultrasound frequencies to distort recorded sound.

Additionally, the startup claims the device can detect nearby microphones and provide logs of these devices to users. It mentions the use of “novel AI, physics, and signal processing technology", though technical specifics have not been shared.
Despite the bold claims, Deveillance has not provided proof-of-concept demonstrations or third-party validation. The company also does not mention whether the detection system works with:
- Dictaphones
- Wired microphones
- Smartphones in aeroplane mode
These unanswered questions leave several aspects of the technology unclear.
