As part of its strategy to diversify production out of China, Apple is continuing to increase its manufacturing base in India. In 2025, the Cupertino-based tech major built about half of its worldwide iPhone production in India, a recent report said. Government officials also noticed that the company exported billions of dollars’ worth of made-in-India iPhones so far in this fiscal year, reflecting India’s growing role in Apple’s global supply chain.

Apple’s iPhone Production in India

Apple produced roughly 55 million iPhone units in India in 2025, Bloomberg reported, citing those familiar with the context. That is a major increase over the 36 million units manufactured in the country in 2024.

The figure accounts for about 25 per cent of Apple’s annual iPhone production.

Apple globally produces between 220 million and 230 million iPhones each year overall.

Increased Production and Supply Chain SHift

As per the report, Apple raised its iPhone production in India by about 53 percent during 2025. The move is part of the company’s continuing effort to lessen its reliance on China amid geopolitical uncertainty and efforts at supply chain diversification.

Even with the increase, iPhone shipments from China remain a large majority of Apple’s global production.

An Apple spokesperson was quoted as saying that although assembly operations are growing in India, manufacturing electronics and components there “is still more expensive” than China and Vietnam.

Role of Apple’s Manufacturing Partners

Apple uses various contract manufacturers to assemble its smartphones in India.

These include:

- Foxconn

- Tata Electronics

- Pegatron

Most of these firms are working under the Indian government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme initiated under Make in India back in 2022.

iPhone Shipments From India

Earlier, Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Apple has exported nearly $50 billion (roughly Rs. 4,60,300 crore) worth of iPhones manufactured in India since beginning its local expansion.

Of this, about $16 billion (roughly Rs. 1.44 lakh crore) worth of iPhones were exported in just the first nine months of FY26.

The government also expects that number to keep growing before the fiscal year ends.

The minister further stated that India’s electronics production has seen sixfold increase in four years, showcasing the rapid growth of manufacturing capabilities in the nation.

That growth has made India an increasingly important center for smartphone manufacturing, and it even surpassed China as the largest source of smartphones shipped to the United States earlier this year.
