Types of Holi:  Holi is one of the most loved and colourful festivals of India. In 2026, the festival of Holi will be celebrated on March 4th. The festival is a lot more than colours; it is a festival of vibrancy, of prosperity and joy. The majority of India celebrates it by putting colour on each other, known as ‘Gulaal.’ But across India, it holds numerous cultural significances and traditions, making the festival a colourful blend of mythology, fun, and tradition.

Here are 9 different kinds of Holi celebrations across the globe that beautifully reflect the cultural diversity of India:

1. Lathmar Holi (Barsana, Uttar Pradesh)

The most chaotic Holi celebration. During Lathmar Holi, women playfully chase and beat their men with bamboo sticks (lathis), symbolising Radha chasing Krishna. As men try to dodge, the air fills with laughter. It is celebrated days before the main Holi celebration.

2. Phoolon Ki Holi (Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh)

No artificial colours are used in this Holi celebration. The beautiful custom is all about people showering blooms on each other, especially at the Banke Bihari Temple. This environment-friendly celebration symbolises the love of Krishna and Radha through scented flowers.

3. Dol Jatra (West Bengal)

Idols of Radha-Krishna are carried in flower-adorned dresses and decorations. Festivities also include singing, dancing, and application of 'abir' (colored powder), along with 'malpoa' sweets.

4. Rang Panchami (Maharashtra)

After Holika Dahan, people move around in the streets for five days, throwing colours and water. Lavani folk songs and Puran Poli sweets add to the one-week celebration.

5. Yaosang (Manipur)

Six days of sports Holi with Thabal Chongba (folk dance circle). Youth engage in mud and colour play, mixing games, food, and socialising.

6. Shigmo (Goa)

Tribal procession includes ghost dances, folk songs, and rangoli art. The beat of Nagra drums signifies the arrival of spring in a distinct way.

7. Baithki Holi (Uttarakhand)

As the name suggests, Baithki Holi is Sseated gatherings, where devotees sing classical ragas for 15 days in a row, without standing. Dholak beats recall Krishna's playfulness in the Kumaon hills.

8. Manjal Kuli (Kerala)

In Manjal Kuli, celebrated in Kerala, coloured turmeric paste replaces Gulal, and families apply it with the objective of sacred purification. The celebration of this festival also includes feasting.

9. Huranga (Mathura)

Huranga is an energetic and aggressive Holi celebration that happens one day after the main festival. During these festivities, women playfully tear the clothes of men, and they drench them with water in retaliation.
