A lot of women on the Internet have confirmed that undergoing IVF treatment can, at times, become draining, both emotionally and physically. Medical appointments, injections, waiting periods, everything takes a huge toll on your mental well-being. While doctors focus on the medical side of treatment, self-care is also an important aspect of successful IVF treatment.

Why Self-Care Is Important During IVF?

According to Dr Beena Muktesh, Senior IVF Expert, Motherhood Hospital, Gurgaon, “IVF can affect sleep, mood, appetite, and energy levels. Hormonal changes may cause mood swings, fatigue, or feeling overwhelmed.”

She added, “Many women end up feeling stressed, anxious, and worried about the results. Self-care does not mean ignoring treatment; it means supporting your body and mind so you can cope better with the process and keep your emotional well-being intact. However, it does not guarantee the result of the treatment.”

7 Self-Care Tips During IVF To Protect Your Mental And Physical Well-Being:

Follow these self-care steps, suggested by Dr Beena Muktesh:

1. Take Care Of Yourself:

IVF can be draining; don’t be harsh on yourself. Short naps and relaxed evenings can help restore energy. Don’t just overexert when the treatment is going on. Rest is necessary for couples.

2. Eat A Balaned Meal:

It is important to focus on balanced meals with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds, and protein. Staying well-nourished supports hormonal balance and maintains good energy levels. Make sure to avoid junk, oily, canned, and processed foods.

Additionally, the doctor also advises not skipping meals at all. Drink enough water, take supplements as advised by the doctor, and seek help from an expert when it comes to the diet.

3. Try Staying Active:

Light activities like walking, stretching, or prenatal yoga can help improve mood and circulation. The couple shouldn’t do heavy workouts. Exercise only after the doctor advises and under the guidance of a fitness trainer or a yoga practitioner.

4. Keep Calm:

Deep breathing, meditation, journaling, or listening to calm music can make you feel at ease.

The doctor also cautiously suggests that, “If feelings of anxiety, sadness or stress become persistent, seeking professional counselling or mental health support can be extremely helpful during IVF.” Lastly, it is important to constantly remind yourself that IVF is a journey of patience, strength, and compassion for yourself. Medical treatment guides you through the process, but self-care helps you not give up.
