T20 World Cup 2026: Without a doubt, the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 has become a playground for politics between the Cricketing boards. The events unfolding every day regarding the ongoing standoff between the ICC (International Cricket Council), PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) and BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) have left a bad taste for fans around the world.
It all began with Bangladesh requesting ICC to shift their games out of India, citing security concerns with Pakistan supporting them. After the absence of any credible threat, ICC denied Bangladesh's request, which forced BCB to withdraw from the tournament a few days before the start of the tournament.
PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, who is infamous for his anti-India rhetoric, decided to boycott the upcoming IND vs PAK match on February 15. Notably, the directive came from the Pakistan government as they called it a moral stand to support Bangladesh. Interestingly, Naqvi is also the Interior Minister (equivalent to the Home Ministry in India) in the Pakistani government.

As per the latest development, ICC has sent its deputy chairman, Imran Khawaja, to meet PCB Chairman Naqvi to seek a resolution. Notably, BCB President Aminul Islam was also present as they met in Lahore on Sunday to discuss Pakistan's decision to boycott the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 match against India. As per Cricbuzz, Naqvi has put forth three demands to change their decision, which include resumption of bilateral series between India and Pakistan, more funding for PCB, and participation fee for Bangladesh.
Will ICC budge?
The governing body based in Dubai is likely to award a walkover to India in case Pakistan remains adamant on the boycott. Past precedents where Australia and the West Indies refused to play their matches in Sri Lanka ended with their opponents getting the points.
Financial Implications For PCB
Any cancellations may impact the revenue generated from the tournament, which is shared among the ICC member boards. The ICC's constitution can impose disciplinary actions on the member if it violates regulations, including those concerning political interference. According to reports, the host broadcaster might seek compensation from the ICC, which would subsequently be deducted from the PCB’s annual revenue share.
Suspension 'Looms' Large On PCB
According to Article 2.4(D) of the ICC Constitution, member boards must function autonomously and without government interference in cricket-related issues. The ICC has a history of suspending member countries, such as Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, due to instances of governmental interference.
“The ICC has wide-ranging powers. It could go all the way from slapping fines to suspending the membership of a board," Former head of the ICC’s media and communications department Sami Ul Hasan was quoted as saying by Al Jazeera.
Pakistan's U-Turn Imminent?
Considering all the factors listed above, Pakistan government is likely to make a U-turn on its decision to boycott the game against India. With the match scheduled on Sunday (February), the announcement from the Shahbaz Sharif government could come soon.
Pakistan Media reported that the dispute will be resolved through mutual consultation within 24 hours.
Geo TV reported that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to consult the Pakistan government for clear guidance on the issue and a formal announcement will be made soon.
