- Trump alleges Iran shot down US Apache helicopter in Hormuz.
- US President vows retaliation, instructs military to respond.
- Incident occurs amidst sensitive US-Iran diplomatic negotiations.
US President Donald Trump has alleged that Iran shot down an American Apache helicopter while it was patrolling the Strait of Hormuz overnight. In a Truth Social post, Trump said that he has instructed US defence forces to respond to the incident.
"I have just been informed by our Great Military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our highly sophisticated Apache Helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz," Trump wrote.
Trump added that retaliation is necessary following the alleged attack. "Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack," he said.
The development comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment, with Washington and Tehran engaged in ongoing negotiations aimed at easing tensions and working toward a possible truce framework in the region.
Earlier reports from Sky News Arabia indicated that a draft agreement had received preliminary acceptance from the US side, raising hopes of progress in stalled negotiations focused on regional stability and de-escalation.
What Happened To The American Apache Helicopter
A US Army Apache attack helicopter, which has been playing a key role in the US blockade, crashed near the Strait of Hormuz, with US President Donald Trump saying the two crew members on board were "fine" after the incident involving the strategic waterway, which remains under a chokehold by Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor, continues to be a major geopolitical flashpoint, with discussions in negotiations reportedly focused on securing safe maritime movement and reducing military escalation.
Trump insists an Iran deal is coming
Despite the recent escalation of conflict, Trump also expressed renewed optimism over negotiations with Iran. "We have a good chance" of signing a deal in "two or three days," Trump said. But he didn't provide any details on why there was reason for new optimism.
"We're very close to having a very, very good, strong, powerful deal," the president said. "If we go and bomb - which we could do very easily if we want, and we spend another two or three weeks bombing - they'll have nothing left whatsoever. But you won't have the Strait open for months."
He added, "If we do the bombing, you know, a lot of people are going to be killed. Who wants to do that? I don't."
Trump Also Urges Iran-Israel Calm
Trump has recently called for an immediate halt to hostilities between Iran and Israel following renewed exchanges of fire. He also spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who reportedly agreed to pause strikes against Iran while continuing operations in Lebanon against Hezbollah.
Following the statement, Iran reportedly ended its military campaign against Israel on Monday and issued a stern warning of more severe attacks if Israel continues its attacks in Lebanon.
