The United States and Israel are on the verge of launching a significant military operation against Iran, potentially beginning “very soon." According to a report from Axios, citing sources, the operation would be significantly larger in scope than last year’s 12-day conflict, and could last for weeks if implemented.

The report suggests that the Trump administration is preparing for a campaign that would extend well beyond smaller-scale actions, resembling a full-scale military engagement.

Officials indicated that the operation would likely involve a joint effort with Israel, marking a significant escalation in regional military tensions.

A decision to initiate such a large-scale operation could have far-reaching geopolitical consequences, potentially reshaping security dynamics across the Middle East. “Such a war would have a dramatic impact on the entire region and major implications for the remaining three years of the Trump presidency," the Axios report noted.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, including the latest nuclear talks in Geneva, officials cited in the report expressed scepticism regarding any breakthrough.

The military build-up in the region, including the deployment of substantial US forces, continues even as negotiations proceed.

At the same time, US President Trump has consistently emphasised the need to address Iran’s nuclear ambitions. In recent days, discussions with allies and advisers have highlighted the possibility of resorting to military action should negotiations fail to yield substantive concessions from Tehran.

The growing presence of US naval and air assets in the Middle East has added to the sense of urgency. Reports, citing open flight-tracking data, indicate that over 150 US military cargo flights carrying vital equipment and aircraft have arrived in the region.
