US President Donald Trump has announced that he will raise the global 10 per cent tariff he imposed just one day earlier to 15 per cent, in response to the US Supreme Court’s ruling that his method for implementing tariffs was illegal.

“I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10 per cent Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been ‘ripping’ the US off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15 per cent level,” Trump said in a social-media post on Saturday.

Just hours after the Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday, Trump imposed a 10 per cent global tariff on foreign goods in an attempt to safeguard his trade agenda. The US Supreme Court had struck down President Donald Trump’s extensive global tariffs on Friday, which he had pursued under a law designed for use during national emergencies. This ruling rejected one of his most controversial assertions of authority, with significant consequences for the global economy.

The justices, in a 6-3 ruling authored by conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, upheld a lower court's decision that the Republican president's use of this 1977 law exceeded his authority. Roberts, citing a prior Supreme Court ruling, wrote that "the President must 'point to clear Congressional authorisation' to justify his extraordinary assertion of the power to impose tariffs," adding, "He cannot."

The law permits him to impose a levy of up to 15 per cent for a period of 150 days, although this could face legal challenges, according to a Reuters report. During this time, his administration will work on implementing new and “legally permissible” tariffs, he stated.

The Republican president has been vocal about the case, describing it as one of the most significant in US history and warning that a ruling against him would deal an economic blow to the country. However, legal opposition has spanned the political spectrum, including libertarian and pro-business groups typically aligned with the GOP. Polling has shown that tariffs are not widely supported by the public, amid growing concerns over affordability.
