United States President Donald Trump made a surprise phone call to US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor during celebrations marking America’s 250th Independence Day at the US Embassy in New Delhi on Sunday. Gor said Trump called personally and sent a warm message for India. 

Trump Calls PM Modi A 'Great Friend'

Gor put Trump on speaker during the event, allowing attendees to hear his remarks live. Trump said, "I love India… I just want to say hello to everybody. I love the Prime Minister. PM Modi is great, he is my friend," drawing a warm response from those present. The event was attended by External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar as well.

Trump's Message To India

Trump further said India can “count on him 100 per cent,” adding that if the country ever needs help, it knows where to reach him. He said the US is performing strongly with a “record economy and record stock market,” and added that he is a big fan of PM Modi. Trump also praised US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is currently on an official visit to India.

"India can count on me 100%. If they ever need help, they know where to call. They call right here. We're doing well. We're setting records. We have a record economy, a record stock market and anything India wants to get. I am a big fan of Prime Minister Modi...Marco is the greatest. He's going down as the greatest Secretary of State in the history of the US...Say hello to Prime Minister Modi and let him know I'm a big fan," Trump said.

EAM S Jaishankar Hails India-US Ties

Speaking at the same event, EAM Jaishankar highlighted the growing strategic partnership between India and the US. He said both countries share a strong commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and stressed the need for "zero tolerance for terrorism." He added that the world is currently going through a period of transition, which makes India-US relations even more significant.

Jaishankar said, "India and the United States have a strong interest in combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We must always be clear about zero tolerance for terrorism, and that is why our counter terrorism cooperation is so important... It is widely recognised that the world is now in an era of transition. This actually makes the case for our relationship even stronger. "
