A new Dutch government was formed on Monday, with Rob Jetten, the youngest-ever Prime Minister and an openly gay centrist, being sworn in. At just 38 years old, Jetten pulled off a surprising victory in the election, narrowly defeating the far-right Freedom Party. He is the first openly gay and youngest Prime Minister in the Netherlands' history.

After taking the oath of office, Jetten shared his excitement on X, stating that it was “an enormous honour to be able to get to work as prime minister.”

The Netherlands' leading LGBTQI organisation, COC, welcomed Jetten's appointment. In a statement, the organisation noted that the new prime minister could serve as a role model "for people from the rainbow community."

"It demonstrates that your sexual orientation doesn’t have to be a determining factor. You can be a construction worker, a doctor, a lawyer, or even a prime minister," the statement quoted by AFP said.

Jetten's D66 party has formed a coalition with the centre-right CDA and the liberal VVD parties, although they will be nine seats short of a parliamentary majority, AFP reported.
