At least 15 people have died after a military helicopter crashed in the Arequipa region of Peru, the country's air force said on Monday.

The helicopter that crashed was a Mi-17. It lost radio contact on Sunday afternoon. A search operation was launched, and on Monday, the Peruvian Air Force found 15 people dead.

Among the dead are 4 crew members and 11 passengers, the air force said. "Rescue personnel have confirmed the deaths of the four crew members… as well as the 11 passengers who were on board," an air force statement said.

Mi-17, the Russian-made aircraft taken off from the city of Pisco, in the Ica region, on Sunday. During a search effort that lasted till he next day, rescuers located it over 300 kilometres (186 miles) away in the town of Chala, in Arequipa.

The helicopter was on duty to rescue people as nature is wreaking havoc in the Arequipa region. Severe flooding has caused widespread disruption of life, and rescue operations are underway to rescue those trapped in the disaster.

The helicopter was heading to areas devastated by floods, and people were awaiting help when it crashed.
