Pakistan Petrol Price: In a first major economic shock linked to escalating conflict in West Asia, the Pakistani government has increased the petrol and high-speed diesel prices by PKR 55 per litre each, marking the largest single hike in the country's history.

Speaking at a press conference just before midnight, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb announced the hike. They also reassured that Pakistan has sufficient petroleum reserves and there is no immediate shortage of fuel in the country.

Record Hike In Petrol And High-Speed Diesel Prices

The Pakistani government has increased fuel prices, pushing petrol and high-speed diesel rates up by PKR 55 per litre. Following the revision:

- Ex-depot price of petrol revised to PKR 321.17 per litre from PKR 266.17, marking an increase of around 17 per cent.

- Ex-depot price of high-speed diesel fixed at PKR 335.86 per litre for the coming week, up by about 20 per cent from PKR 280.86 per litre.

Why Have Petrol And Diesel Prices Increased?

Speaking to news agency ANI, officials said that the move was unavoidable as international oil prices have seen a steep rise amid the ongoing West Asia conflict. The escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel and Israel has disrupted key global energy supply routes.

One of the world's most critical energy chokepoints, the Strait of Hormuz, has effectively been paralysed, affecting shipments and tightening supply lines.

Government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, said Islamabad had a limited choice but to pass on the global price shock onto consumers in order to stabilise the country's energy finances and meet commitments discussed during consultations with the IMF.

Citizens Feel The Pinch

Following the Pakistani government's decision to increase petrol and high-speed diesel prices, many citizens said that the sharp spike has made an already difficult economic situation even more challenging.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Muhammad Nadeem, a commuter, said, “It feels like a noose has been tightened around our necks. Nothing makes sense anymore. Yesterday, when I filled up with petrol, things still felt manageable. But today, I had to refill at Pakistani Rupees (PKR) 324 per litre. I am doing two jobs, but it's still not enough to cover the expenses. Life is becoming increasingly difficult.”

Another commuter, Mujeeb Iqtidar, said, “Our government has never thought about our well-being or progress. It's not only fuel prices--other essentials will also become more expensive. This is just a beginning.”
