A massive 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off northern Japan on Monday, prompting widespread panic and a tsunami alert, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The quake’s epicentre was located off the coast of Hokkaido, near the coastal city of Aomori, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) below the seabed. Authorities warned of possible tsunami waves of up to three metres (10 feet) hitting the affected regions.

The JMA issued tsunami alerts for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate, after the earthquake jolted large parts of northern and eastern Japan. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre further cautioned that hazardous waves could affect areas within 1,000 km of the epicentre, along the coasts of Japan and Russia.

Safety Checks At Nuclear Plants

Nuclear power plants in the affected regions were conducting safety inspections, NHK reported, while local authorities urged residents to evacuate low-lying areas and move to higher ground. Public transportation was also disrupted, with East Japan Railway suspending some train services in the area, Reuters reported.

Terrifying Footage Captures Quake Impact

Amid the chaos, locals shared terrifying videos capturing the quake’s impact. One clip showed parked cars visibly shaking, while another depicted lights swaying as earthquake warning alerts blared from a phone.

Another video shared on Twitter showed tsunami warning sirens sounding, urging residents to evacuate immediately.

Japan, located in the seismically active “Ring of Fire,” experiences roughly 20 per cent of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or greater. Experts continue to monitor aftershocks and the potential impact of tsunami waves, urging people in vulnerable coastal areas to remain vigilant.

As emergency services respond and nuclear plants continue their safety checks, authorities emphasise that the situation remains dynamic. Residents are being advised to follow official guidance closely to ensure safety, while monitoring systems track ocean activity and aftershocks.
