Following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran raised a red "flag of revenge" over the dome of the Jamkaran Mosque. The confirmation on Sunday triggered protests and mourning in several countries, including India.

US President Donald Trump described Khamenei as “one of the most evil people in history” and said his death represented “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their country.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there were “many signs that this tyrant is no longer alive” and urged Iranians to unite and “overthrow the regime” to secure their future.

Reports from Tehran said that cheers were heard in some parts of the capital when initial reports of Khamenei’s death emerged from Israel, even as plumes of smoke were seen over the district where he typically resided. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) claimed Khamenei was the “architect” of plans against Israel and referred to him as the “head of the Iranian octopus.”

Following Khamenei’s death, Iran has appointed a temporary three-member leadership council to govern until a new supreme leader is chosen.

According to the ISNA news agency, 66-year-old cleric Alireza Arafi has been appointed as a jurist member of the interim body. He joins President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei on the council, which will discharge the duties of the supreme leader until the Assembly of Experts selects a successor.
