India-Bangladesh Ties: Tarique Rahman, who took charge as Bangladesh's new Prime Minister on February 17, following the Bangladesh Nationalist Party's (BNP) decisive election victory, has moved quickly to mend ties with India. In a significant move, he announced the full restoration of visa services for Indian citizens at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi.

The decision, effective from Friday, February 20, marks an end to the suspension that had been in place since December 2025 amid heightened anti-India sentiment. This move signals Bangladesh's newly-elected Prime Minister's broader effort to normalise bilateral ties with India, which had been strained under the previous interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.

Bangladesh Restores All Visa Services For Indians

Starting Friday, February 20, the Bangladesh High Commission resumed all consular services, offering Indian citizens visas across all categories, including tourist, medical, business, and work, that had been partially restricted during the earlier freeze.

According to India TV, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leaders recognise India as a crucial partner in regional security and economic collaboration, and view the restoration of all visa services as a step toward normalising bilateral ties. The decision marks an end to the two-month suspension triggered by the violent protests following the murder of Sharif Usman Hadi, which had fueled attacks on Hindus and led to reciprocal visa restrictions from both sides.
