Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus returned to Bangladesh in August 2024, days after former Chief Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country following massive youth-led protests.
“That was the day of great liberation. What a day of joy it was! Bangladeshis across the world shed tears of happiness. The youth of our country freed it from the grip of a demon,” Yunus said.
During his address, Yunus affirmed that Bangladesh is no longer a ‘submissive’ country and it will form relationships with other countries on the basis of mutual respect and national interest. As per the Daily Star, Yunus said that his administration has restored the fundamental foundation of external engagement, including sovereignty, national interests, and dignity.
Yunus has officially handed over the government and leadership of the country to Tarique Rahman with his resignation. Rahman congratulated the BNP government on a "landslide victory" in the elections last week.
