Months after India launched a powerful attack on Pakistan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said Monday that India is seeking to take "revenge" on Azerbaijan in international organizations due to Baku’s support for Islamabad, Anadoulu Ajansi reported. The remarks from the President came on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in China’s Tianjin when he met Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif on Monday. Also, local media reported that he alleged New Delhi blocked Baku's bid to become an SCO member as it had supported Islamabad during the recent India-Pakistan conflict.
Aliyev congratulated Pakistan on what he described as its victory over India and stressed that, despite New Delhi’s actions in international forums, Azerbaijan prioritises “brotherhood” in its ties with Islamabad.
Operation Sindoor
Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7 to avenge the horrific April 22 Pahalgam attack that saw terrorists gunning down 26 persons, resulted in massive damage to terror infrastructure in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and Pakistan. Pakistan's counter-attack caused no impact, and the two nations decided to cease hostilities on May 10.
On the same day, a few countries, including Azerbaijan and Turkey, extended support to Islamabad. However, New Delhi rejected their stance on various global platforms.
Azerbaijan's open support to Pakistan
Meanwhile, Aliyev has repeatedly emphasised that Azerbaijan’s partnership with Pakistan is rooted in close political, cultural and strategic ties. Sharif thanked Aliyev on behalf of the Pakistani people and government for what he called Azerbaijan’s solidarity during the April-May military confrontation with India. He also underlined the importance of the trilateral Azerbaijan-Türkiye-Pakistan format, recalling his previous visits to Baku.

PM Modi's stern response to Pak-sponsored terror
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also exposed Pakistan’s nefarious agenda against India. Although he did not name Pakistan directly, the dull expression of Shehbaz Sharif went viral on social media platforms. “Recently, we witnessed the most heinous face of terrorism in Pahalgam. I express my deep gratitude to all the friendly nations that stood by us during this moment of grief. This attack was not only an assault on the conscience of India, but also an open challenge to every nation, and every individual who believes in humanity,” PM Modi said during SCO Summit.
“We must state it clearly and in one voice: double standards on terrorism are unacceptable. Together, we must oppose terrorism in every form and manifestation. This is our responsibility towards humanity,” he added.
