Iran-US Tensions: With a deadline of 10 days for a nuclear deal, US President Donald Trump on Thursday warned Iran that 'bad things would happen' if the agreement is delayed. Now, today, Trump again changed his stance, saying he was considering a limited strike on Iran amid talks over the nuclear programme deal. The threatening words from both sides deepened the hostile situation in the Middle East, which continues. The United States assembled the largest amount of military build-up in the Middle East since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

On the other hand Iran's envoy to the United Nations has said that Tehran will respond "decisively" to any "military aggression" by the United States in a letter urging the UN Security Council to condemn recent threats from the US President.

What Is India's Stand?
The Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, on Friday said that India is keeping an eye on Indians in Iran amid escalation with the US. Addressing the weekly press briefing, Jaiswal said, "We are keeping an eye on the situation and staying in constant touch with the Indian community living there (in Iran)." India largely remained neutral on the US-Iran conflict.
In June last year, when the US and Israel attacked Iran, the MEA issued a statement, saying India is deeply concerned at the recent developments between Iran and Israel.
"India urges both sides to avoid any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues. India enjoys close and friendly relations with both countries and stands ready to extend all possible support," the statement read.
Will India Be Affected?
The fresh escalating tensions in the Middle East may have some indirect effects on India, but the direct impact appears very limited in the short term. As the world's third-largest crude oil importer, India is highly vulnerable to instability in the Gulf, from where it sources nearly two-thirds of its oil needs.

A war in the Middle East may affect the supply chain, which may impact India and other oil importers. According to the government data, India imported a crude oil shipment worth USD 111 million from Iran in June 2025. However, India halted imports from Iran in 2008, following the US sanctions on Tehran. The war in the Gulf could also adversely impact the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but critical maritime chokepoint through which nearly one-fifth of global oil supply passes. A war in the oil-producing region will have peripheral effects, and India cannot stand unaffected.
