Videos showing elephants being harassed in the Jagjitpur elephant corridor area of Haridwar are frequently circulating on social media, raising concerns over wildlife safety and the risk of a major accident. Despite repeated incidents, the Forest Department has so far taken no visible action against those involved.
A similar video surfaced on Monday night, showing a man on a scooter deliberately harassing a herd of elephants while recording himself. The act, officials and locals said, could have proved dangerous not only for the elephants but also for the scooter rider and nearby residents.
Jagjitpur falls within a traditional elephant corridor. However, rapid and unplanned construction and population expansion in recent years have blocked several natural elephant routes, forcing the animals to stray into populated areas.
On Monday, a herd of elephants from the Shyampur forest range entered the Jagjitpur area. While the animals were moving peacefully, the scooter rider allegedly chased and provoked them instead of maintaining a safe distance.
Residents allege that similar incidents have occurred repeatedly, with no strict action taken against those harassing wildlife. They warn that the lack of regular monitoring and preventive measures in areas such as Jagjitpur, Pathri and Bahadarabad could lead to a serious mishap.
Responding to the issue, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Swapnil Anirudh said the individuals involved would be identified, and appropriate action would be taken.
