Every year, Mobile World Congress turns Barcelona into a meeting point for the global tech industry. MWC 2026 was no different. Companies from across the world arrived with new phones, laptops, wearables and experimental devices, all trying to show what the next phase of consumer technology might look like.

Some announcements were about products launching soon, while others were early concepts meant to show where companies are experimenting. A few devices, however, stood out because they highlighted clear trends the industry seems to be moving toward.

Here are some of the most interesting things that caught attention at this year’s event.

Motorola Experiments With A New Foldable Direction

Foldable phones are no longer new, but companies are still trying to refine the idea. Motorola used the event to show a different approach with the Moto Razr Fold.

Instead of the usual flip style associated with the Razr brand, this device follows a book-style design similar to larger foldable phones. The focus here is on keeping the phone thin and light while still giving users a large display when opened.

The device reportedly features an 8.1-inch inner display and a 6.6-inch outer screen for quick tasks without unfolding the phone. It also supports the Moto Pen Ultra stylus, which could make it useful for writing or sketching.

Motorola has also paid attention to durability. The phone is said to include IP68 and IP69 ratings for protection against water and dust, along with Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 for stronger display protection.

Smart Glasses That Translate Conversations

Artificial intelligence was a major theme across the event, and Alibaba showed how it could be used in wearable devices.

The company introduced the Qwen S1 smart glasses, designed to translate conversations in real time. When someone speaks in front of the glasses, the system identifies the speech and displays a translated version on the screen inside the lenses.

Alibaba says the product has already launched in China and could reach global markets before the end of the year.

Apart from live translation, the glasses also include features like a teleprompter mode and a built-in music player. The idea is to make the wearable useful for everyday communication, especially when interacting with people who speak different languages.

Tecno Presents a Modular Phone Concept

MWC is also known for unusual concepts, and Tecno showed one of the more interesting ideas this year with its Atom smartphone concept.

The device uses a modular design that allows additional components to be attached magnetically. For example, users could add a larger battery module or an optical zoom camera module depending on what they need.

While it is still a concept device, the idea highlights a different approach to smartphone upgrades. Instead of replacing the whole phone every few years, users could potentially improve certain features through add-ons.

Lenovo Focuses on Making Laptops Easier to Repair

Another interesting approach came from Lenovo, which highlighted a laptop designed to make repairs simpler.

The ThinkPad T14 Gen 7 includes several components that can be replaced easily. The battery, for example, can be swapped without tools. Ports and the keyboard can also be replaced if they stop working.

The laptop also uses LPCAMM2 memory technology, which allows memory upgrades in a more compact design.

The broader goal is to extend the life of laptops by making repairs and upgrades easier for users instead of forcing them to buy a completely new device.

What MWC 2026 says about the industry

Events like MWC often reveal the direction companies are exploring. This year, many announcements suggested that tech companies are thinking beyond raw performance.

Ideas like thinner foldable phones, AI-powered smart glasses, modular smartphones and repair-friendly laptops all point toward devices that are more adaptable and longer-lasting.

Some of these products may take time to reach the market, but together they offer a clear preview of where consumer technology could be heading next.
