Elon Musk-led xAI has opened applications for a new human-facing role aimed at improving the writing abilities of its Grok AI chatbot. The San Francisco–based AI startup is hiring for a position titled Writing Specialist, with the focus on evaluating, refining, and creating high-quality written content across multiple genres.

According to the company, the role is designed to help Grok better understand structure, tone, creativity, and accuracy in advanced forms of writing. xAI says selected candidates will play a direct role in shaping how the chatbot produces and understands language.

What xAI Is Looking For

In its job description, xAI says it is seeking professionals with deep experience in specific writing disciplines, ranging from creative fiction and journalism to technical and medical writing.

“You will evaluate, refine, and create elite-level writing in a variety of genres and formats to advance Grok's capabilities in one or more writing specialty areas.”

The company notes that writing specialists will use xAI’s proprietary tools to label, annotate, and refine AI-generated text. The goal is to improve clarity, structure, engagement, and domain-specific accuracy.

Candidates will also be expected to deliver carefully curated data that can be used to improve Grok’s writing outputs over time. Collaboration is a key part of the role, with specialists working closely alongside engineers and other experts to design tasks that push the AI’s writing proficiency further.

Who Can Apply For The Role

xAI states that applicants must have proven proficiency in English and strong credentials in at least one chosen writing specialty. The role also demands the ability to critique and improve AI-generated text for readability, grammar, logical flow, consistency, creativity, and reader immersion.

For creative fiction roles, xAI is looking for authors with verified publishing deals with major publishing houses, sales exceeding 50,000 units, or screenwriters with credits on platforms such as Netflix or HBO.

Game writing applicants must have at least five years of experience and a portfolio featuring branching narratives and dialogue systems. Writing roles in journalism need five or more years of experience with bylines in large publications such as The New York Times or the BBC.

In technical and medical writing roles, the minimum experience required by xAI is five years, coupled with certifications or higher educational qualifications such as a master’s or PhD, depending on the discipline.

Applicants for poetry writing should have expertise in traditional forms such as haiku, sonnet, and villanelle. xAI has made it clear that free verse specialists are not a fit for this role.

“If your publication record is primarily free verse, please do not apply, as the position requires a deep understanding of classical forms and poetic techniques.”
