US Open 2025: Naomi Osaka had put up a brilliant performance as she had defeated the world no.3 and former champion Coco Gauff on Monday. It took her just one hour and four minutes to win the match by 6-3, 6-2.
This win helped Osaka qualify for a Grand Slam quarterfinal after a four-and-a-half-year absence. She has also now entered the top 20 WTA rankings. It is also her third quarterfinal of the ongoing Grand Slam and fifth overall.
Osaka dominated the match from the start and showed glimpses of her former self, whereas Gauff struggled with both her serve and forehand. It was the first time that they were facing each other after the 2019 match, where Osaka had once again defeated the young Gauff.
Post the match, Osaka talked about watching Coco Gauff clinch the US Open title way back in 2023 and just a few months after her daughter was born. She also called Flushing Meadows one of her favourite courts.
“I’m a little sensitive and don’t want to cry, but I had so much fun out here. Just two months after giving birth to my daughter, I was in the stands watching Coco. I really wanted the chance to come back and play on this court—it’s my favourite in the world. It means so much to be here again. I want to give a big thank you to my team. We’ve been through a lot, and it hasn’t always been easy, but they’ve stood by me. Thank you all—I love you,” she told the broadcasters during the post-match presentation.
