West Bengal CID on Tuesday reached former Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee's residence, Harish Chatterjee Street in Kalighat area of Kolkata, in relation to the 'fake-signature' case.

The CID team entered her house-cum-office premises in the Kalighat area after a brief standoff with security personnel and a party leader. The team visited her house as a part of its probe into the controversy surrounding alleged forged signatures of TMC MLAs, which has triggered a split in the party.

Officials of the state investigating agency were accompanied by cops from the Kalighat police station and a large contingent of women police personnel.

The CID officials present at the spot told news agency PTI that the search was sought on the basis of a reply submitted by TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee to an earlier notice issued by the agency.

The move comes after the agency served several notices seeking information related to the alleged forging of signatures of TMC MLAs on a proposal submitted to the Assembly Speaker for recognition of Sohandev Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition.

The Speaker had sighted a mismatch in the signatures of several MLAs in the proposal and in the attendance register during the oath-taking in the Assembly. Later, Ritabrata Banerjee-led bloc came forward, defying Chattopadhyay's appointment and claiming the LoP position.

The CID has also issued multiple summons to Abhishek Banerjee, the latest being sent on Monday after he skipped his appearance on two summons. The CID had asked him to appear before it by 5 PM on Tuesday.

On Monday, a team of eight CID officers, including women personnel, reached Banerjee's Kalighat residence in south Kolkata around 4.40 pm, hours after he missed the second appearance deadline at noon.
