In a major reshuffle, the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday announced the appointment of new Governors, and Lieutenant Governors is several states and Union Territories (UTs). including Taranjit Singh Sandhu in Delhi.

Sandhu will replace Vinay Kumar Saxena as Delhi's new LG. Saxena has been appointed as the new LG to Ladakh. Among other key announcements is that of RN Ravi as West Bengal Governor. Ravi was the Tamil Nadu Governor. Both states are slated for assembly polls this year.

Who is Taranjit Singh Sandhu?

Sandhu is a retired diplomat and a politician who has served as the Indian Ambassador to the United States at a crucial moment when the world was hit by waves of Covid pandemic. Washington saw a transition from the Republican Trump to the Democratic Joe Biden administration.

He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1988 and went on to become one of the finest Indian diplomats with a distinguished 35 years of service. He played a key role in establishing an embassy in Ukraine.

28th Indian High Commissioner to US

In the United States, he served in various capacities, including the first secretary, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington DC and the 28th High Commissioner of India between February 2020 and January 2024.

He also served as Consul General of India in Frankfurt, Germany. After his retirement in 2024, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and contested the 2024 general election on the party ticket from Amritsar.

Lost Amritsar Lok Sabha election in 2024

He was relegated to the third position in a four-cornered contest in Amritsar. Amritsar was clinched by incumbent Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, who won by a margin of over 40,000 votes.
