Ramadan 2026 Timetable: In India, the holy month of Ramadan is expected to commence on February 19, 2026, marking a period of deep spiritual introspection and devotion for millions. After the sighting of the moon, the holy month begins and for the next 30 days, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. The start of this sacred month is traditionally determined by the sighting of the new crescent moon (hilal) on the evening of the 29th day of Shaban. Following Islamic lunar tradition, if the moon is observed after sunset, the first day of fasting begins the following dawn.

Shahi Imam of Chandni Chowk's Fatehpuri mosque Maulana Mufti Mukarram Ahmed announced that the crescent moon was sighted and the month of fasting will start from February 19.
Naib Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Shaban Bukhari also declared that the moon was sighted.

The Significance Of Moon Sighting

The act of looking for the crescent is a cherished communal tradition rooted in scripture. Families and friends gather at dusk, scanning the horizon in anticipation. The first glimpse of the silver sliver transforms the atmosphere into one of celebration, as the greeting “Ramadan Mubarak” is shared among neighbors. Beyond marking time, this sighting signals a transition into a month of heightened empathy, discipline and worship.

Understanding The Essence Of Ramadan

Ramadan commemorates the period approximately 1,400 years ago when the Prophet Muhammad received the initial revelations of the Quran during Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power). As one of the Five Pillars of Islam, the month is defined by:

Self-Restraint: Abstaining from food, drink and other physical needs from dawn (Suhoor) until sunset (Iftar).

Purification: Focusing on spiritual growth, nightly Taraweeh prayers, and the recitation of the holy book.

The month concludes with Eid ul-Fitr, a joyful festival featuring communal prayers, grand feasts, and social reunions.

During this month, a special prayer called Taraweeh are offered in mosques in the evening. In this prayer, the entire Quran is recited and it continues till the sighting of the Eid moon.
