Lok Sabha Live News: The opposition on Tuesday moved a resolution in Lok Sabha seeking the removal of Om Birla as Speaker. The notice to move the resolution in the lower house was submitted after the required 50 members supported the notice amid a heated debate on who would preside over the House during the debate.
The opposition has accused Birla of bias towards the ruling party, alleging that the Speaker has repeatedly stopped opposition leaders, including LoP Rahul Gandhi, from speaking in the House. The opposition leaders have also raised the issue of the suspension of eight opposition MPs during the Budget Session to back their no-confidence motion.

- Home Minister Amit Shah then quipped that it is true that Rijiju has interrupted the most, but there has never been an opposition like the current one.
- Gogoi claimed that if a research of transcripts was done, Rijiju would be found to interrupt opposition members most often.
- Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju also intervened and said this was a discussion on the Speaker, and if the opposition is talking of other issues, they should not interrupt when "we reply".
- However, when Gogoi mentioned former army chief MM Naravane's book, Chair Jagdambika Pal urged him to stick to the reasons for bringing the resolution.
- Congress MP slammed the Speaker's advice to PM Modi, claiming he was reportedly told not to attend the House during the Motion of Thanks debate due to "credible information" that some women MPs might surround his chair and create an unexpected situation.
- He termed the allegations against women MPs baseless, saying their intentions and conduct were being unfairly questioned.
- Gogoi raised questions over the manner in which the Speaker presided over the House on February 2 when Gandhi had to speak on the motion of thanks to the president's address. "There was an expectation that the chair would be neutral. But research of uncorrected versions would show the number of times the LoP was interrupted. While the LoP was on his feet, another member was called upon (to speak)," Gogoi said.
- "Is this Parliamentary tradition we want to show? Microphones are being used to silence MPs. It stands in direct contradiction with the rituals of this House. The same thing happened to MP Shashi Tharoor. He was speaking on February 9, and in the middle of his speech, his mic was switched off. It is said that the opposition must have its say, but how can we say when you switch off the mic? Tharoor stated that his mic was switched off, which has never happened before," he said.
- "The no-confidence motion has been brought as a responsibility to protect the dignity of the House, not personally against Om Birla," Gaurav Gogoi added.
- Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi began the debate and said that despite all members of the House having good relations with Birla, the no-trust vote was moved to "protect Lok Sabha's dignity". "All Of Us Have Good Relations With Om Birla. But we are sad and compelled to bring a no-confidence motion against him," Gogoi said.
- Jagdambika Pal has allotted 10 hours for the debate on the no-confidence motion against Om Birla.
- Rejecting the claims, Pal put the notice to move the resolution to vote and asked at least 50 MPs to stand up in support. Once the required number of members stood up, the notice was accepted, and Jawed read out the resolution, which was also admitted for discussion.
- Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju termed Owaisi's claim "irrelevant" and said that Pal was competent to preside over the Lok Sabha.
- As soon as Jawed read out the notice, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi raised a point of order questioning the decision to allow Jagdambika Pal to chair the proceedings, as he was appointed to the panel of chairpersons by Birla.
- Responding to opposition's demands, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that member of the panel of chairpersons Jagadambika Pal can preside over the Lok Sabha during the debate on the no-confidence motion.
- Opposition leaders said that a person should be specifically appointed to preside over the Lok Sabha when a resolution for the removal of the Speaker is taken up.
- Congress legislator Mohammad Jawed read out the notice seeking to move the resolution to remove Birla from office. Besides Jawed, the resolution was also moved by MPs K Suresh and Mallu Ravi.
- The no-confidence motion was moved during the first part of the Budget Session in February, with 118 opposition members from Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK and others signing the motion. However, the motion was not supported by Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress.
- In the notice, Opposition MPs stated that Speaker Birla had repeatedly denied them the opportunity to raise matters of public importance during House proceedings, which they claim prompted the move to bring the no-confidence motion.
