Fake Universities: The emboldened spirit of the education mafia in the country can be gauged by the proliferation of fake universities. Their presence, limited to just eight states two years ago, has now expanded to 12. The number of fake universities has also increased from 20 to 32 in the last two years.

The new states where fake universities have emerged include Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Arunachal Pradesh. Amid this growing network of fake universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has cautioned students and parents against such institutions. It has also advised students not to seek admission in these fake universities.

The UGC issued a directive in conjunction with an alert issued regarding a fake institution operating under the name Global Human Peace University in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

How To Identify Fake Universities

Students and parents have been advised to consult the list of fake universities on the UGC website before enrolling. It is worth noting that for the past few years, the UGC issued the lists of fake universities.

At the same time, fake universities, which have spread their network to 12 states, are making thousands of students their victims every year. The most shocking thing is that out of 32 fake universities, 12 are present in Delhi alone, some are operating at a distance of a few kilometres from the UGC.

States That Have Fake Universities

At present, among the 12 states where fake universities exist, there are 12 in Delhi, four in Uttar Pradesh, two each in Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, while there is one fake university each in Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh.

Fake universities are operating under these names in major states.

In Delhi:

  • All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences
  • Commercial University Limited
  • United Nations University
  • Vocational University
  • ADR Centric Juridical University
  • Indian Institute of Science and Engineering
  • Vishwakarma Open University for Self-Employment
  • Aadhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya
  • World Peace of United National University
  • Institute of Management and Engineering
  • Mountain Institute of Management and Technology and National Institute of Management Solutions.

In West Bengal

  • Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine
  • Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research

In Uttar Pradesh:

  • Gandhi Hindi Vidyapeeth Prayag
  • Mahamaya Technical University Noida
  • Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Open University
  • Aligarh and Bharatiya Shiksha Parishad Bharat Bhavan Lucknow

In Haryana:

Magic and Art University, Faridabad

Jharkhand:

  • Daksha University, Ranchi.
  • Impersonating foreign universities

With the arrival of foreign universities in the country, fake universities are also now spreading their network by posing as foreign universities. Recently, Columbia University in Sri Lanka wrote to the UGC complaining about a similar fake university operating in Maharashtra using their name and logo. Following this, the UGC warned students and parents about these fake universities.
