Residents in several sectors of Greater Noida will soon be able to get some relief from water supply problems this week as three newly constructed underground water reservoirs (UGRs) are set to become functional. This is expected to help improve water pressure and supply in those areas.

With the number of people in Greater Noida continuing to rise rapidly, the water requirement has increased manyfold. The Greater Noida Authority currently distributes water from both groundwater and Ganga river water sources. There are about 20 UGRs currently in use, which supply water to various sectors of Greater Noida.

Residents in many sectors continue to suffer from both water shortages and low water pressure, as well as issues relating to water quality, despite there being sufficient water sources and existing pipelines. Operators face issues in transferring water from UGRs to overhead tanks because of limitations in the network and poor pipeline pressure.

This would mean using powerful motors, which would consume more electricity, and this adds to the overall operational cost.

New UGRs To Improve Water Pressure

To address these concerns, the authority has been constructing additional UGRs closer to residential areas. The objective is to reduce the distance water travels through pipelines and ensure adequate pressure reaches households.

According to Vinod Sharma, Senior Manager in the Authority's Water Department, water supply from newly built UGRs will begin this week in Sectors 2 and 3 of Greater Noida West and Sector Eta-2 in Greater Noida.

All three facilities have completed construction and are currently undergoing trial runs.

The newly developed UGRs have the following capacities:

  • Sector 2: 6,000 kilolitres
  • Sector 3: 3,000 kilolitres
  • Sector Eta-2: 1,500 kilolitres

Moreover, one UGR is being built in Ecotech-4.

Water Demand and Supply

Water requirement for Greater Noida is estimated at 207 million litres per day (MLD). Water available is approximately 210 MLD, as claimed by the Authority. Of this, about 50-60 MLD is being supplied from the Ganga, while the rest is from groundwater resources.

The Officials further stated that the regional UGR-based water distribution system for Greater Noida West is completed and will be in use shortly.
