A 65-year-old retired employee of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly strangling his wife to death at their residence in Avalahalli, police said.
The incident was reported around 11 am, following which Avalahalli police reached the spot and took the accused, identified as Nageshwar Rao, into custody.
According to police, Rao allegedly strangled his wife, Sandhya, at their home. After the incident, he remained at the scene and later contacted an acquaintance, who alerted the authorities. A police team subsequently arrived and detained him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield) Saidulu Adavath said preliminary investigations suggest that Rao had been undergoing treatment for depression and had been distressed for a prolonged period.
"He was reportedly undergoing treatment for depression and was distressed. He allegedly intended to take his life after the incident, which is why he attacked his wife. There appear to be no other major reasons," PTI quoted Saidulu Adavath, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Whitefield).
Police officials stated that Rao allegedly told investigators he was worried about his wife’s future after his death and took the extreme step due to these concerns.
