Bengal SIR Row: Amid the row over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the poll-bound West Bengal, the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is reportedly planning to make a move to impeach the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Gyanesh Kumar. Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee on Tuesday alleged that the way the revision process was being conducted in Bengal was incorrect and has affected the rights of voters. However, the BJP has accused the ruling party of creating a "drama to hide its failures.

While talking to the reporters in New Delhi, Banerjee stated that TMC is considering initiating the process of CEC's impeachment due to his biased steps. "We are considering impeaching the Chief Election Commissioner because of the way he is conducting the SIR, which is incorrect and affects the voting rights of every citizen in the country," Banerjee told the reporters.

Apart from this, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also accused the poll body of deleting a huge number of voters in the constituencies represented by the TMC leaders. "In assembly constituencies of BJP MLAs, the names of a maximum of 3,000 to 4,000 voters are deleted. But in constituencies held by Trinamool Congress MLAs, the number of voters deleted ranges between 40,000 and 1 lakh," Banerjee stated.

"In my own constituency of Bhabanipur in South Kolkata, the names of 40,000 voters have already been deleted in the draft voters' list. Their final target is to delete one lakh names from Bhabanipur," she added. The chief minister further alleged that the poll body deleted 58 lakh names without consulting electoral registration officers.

"The EC is indiscriminately issuing notice for hearing in the name of logical discrepancy. Even Nobel laureate and economist Amartya Sen was summoned for a hearing," Banerjee asserted. While responding to her allegations, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari accused the chief minister of targeting the poll body.
