Bangladesh: In the recently concluded election in Bangladesh, the Tarique Rahman-led Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) registered a massive victory by winning 209 out of the total 300 seats. The party has returned to power after almost two decades following the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. However, the spotlight is not only on Rahman and his party but also on who will get a place in the new cabinet. While there has been no announcement regarding the new cabinet, the question is, will the minorities, especially Hindus, get a place in Rahman's cabinet?

Bangladesh: Minorities Elected To Parliament

As per the Election Commission of Bangladesh, four candidates from minority communities, including two Hindus, emerged victorious in the polls. While Goyeshwar Chandra Roy won from a Dhaka seat, Nitai Roy Chowdhury registered victory in the western Magura constituency. While Roy is a member of BNP's highest policy-making standing committee, Chowdhury works as a senior advisor to the party's top brass.

Will Minorities Get Place In Cabinet?

There has been no information regarding the new cabinet; however, Rahman might consider including at least one member from the minority community in his cabinet to send a larger message of religious harmony. The minorities, especially Hindus, have faced atrocities since the ouster of Hasina, leading to insecurities. Apart from this, the decision to give importance to the minority parliamentarian will also be a positive message for its neighbour India.

The political representation of Hindus has significantly dropped, as 17 Hindu candidates registered victory in the 2024 and 2018 elections, with most of them belonging to Hasina’s Awami League.
