Assam Polls: With just a few months remaining in the Assam assembly polls, the Congress has commenced its campaign to counter the possible polarisation. Senior party leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been made the chairperson of the Screening Committee in the poll-bound state. Gandhi is likely to have several rallies ahead of the polls and will also have the responsibility to pick candidates for the polls. While the Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP is dealing with an anti-incumbency, the road to success for Congress is not going to be easy due to multiple challenges.
Key Challenges For Priyanka Gandhi
With senior Congress leaders such as former state chief Bhupen Borah resigning and openly criticising the party's strategy, the first challenge for Priyanka Gandhi is going to be uniting the party under the leadership of Gaurav Gogoi. The next big challenge for the Congress leader will be to boost the organisation in Assam, which has weakened since the departure of Sarma and other leaders.
Along with picking the right candidates, Priyanka Gandhi will also be responsible for countering the "anti-Miya" campaign by the BJP. The experts believe that the party could not win significant seats in the upper regions of the state, leading to the poll debacle. Apart from this, rather than forming an alliance with AIUDF, the grand old party is trying to bring regional parties under the umbrella of the opposition alliance.
Congress' Strategy For Polls
The rise of Gaurav Gogoi has given a face to Congress to compete against Sarma; however, the party needs to boost the organisation in several regions. The Congress is likely to form an alliance with the regional parties Raijor Dol (RD) and Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) to regain its political ground in Upper and North Assam, dominated by ethnic Assamese communities. After the delimitation exercise in 2023, the number of seats where the minority voters play a key role reduced from 35 of the total 126 seats to 26.
