Arvind Kejriwal, former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convenor, is set for his second innings in active politics after a Delhi court discharged him in the hyped Liquor policy case. Kejriwal can again project himself as "kattar imaandaar", the term he has been using since his early days in the politics. While his resurgence can trouble the BJP in Delhi, Congress will be more watchful and concerned in the other states, including Punjab, Gujarat, and Goa.

AAP To Damage Congress?

With the next Assembly election in Delhi still four years away, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will try to retain the government in Punjab. Apart from this, the party will look to expand its horizon in other states, including Gujarat, Goa, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The party already have above five per cent vote shares in Goa and Gujarat, suggesting its increasing acceptability.

With rise of AAP in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly polls, Congress' vote share and number of seats fell significantly. As per the poll surveys, the people voted for AAP in search of a better opposition party, leading to Congress' downfall, especially in the urban regions. With corruption charges against Kejriwal, Congress was also looking for a comeback in Punjab; however, the AAP's campaign is likely to be more aggressive now.

Conflict Within Congress

While Pawan Khera, the national spokesperson of Congress, termed Kejriwal's acquittal as "predictable political script". However, several other party leaders, including Manish Tewari and Margaret Alva welcomed court's order by stating that Kejriwal was wrongly framed in the case. While responding to Congress' allegations, Kejriwal stated that the top-brass of the grand old party was not sent to jail in any corruption case.

"I want to ask the Congress - Kejriwal went to jail. Did Robert Vadra go to jail? Sanjay Singh went to jail. Did Rahul Gandhi go to jail? Sanjay Singh went to jail. Did Sonia Gandhi ji went to jail? What is Congress saying? Does it have no shame?" Kejriwal asked.

The changing dynamics in the opposition alliance is also likely to provide an opportunity to Kejriwal for a larger role, a possible threat to senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
