Ahmedabad Plane Crash: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Thursday rejected as “incorrect and speculative” reports suggesting that the investigation into the Air India Flight AI-171 crash has been completed. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has stated that the investigation is ongoing and no final conclusions have been reached.
The central agency stated that the inquiry into the Air India crash remains ongoing and that no final conclusions have yet been drawn.
The statement from the AAIB, which operates under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, follows a report published a day earlier by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. The publication ruled out any technical malfunction in the aircraft’s fuel switches and indicated an “intentional act” behind the deactivation of the fuel switches on Air India Flight 171.
According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, citing sources in Western aviation agencies, Indian investigators are expected to submit the final report on the Air India Flight 171 crash, stating that the cause was ‘almost certainly’ an intentional act by a pilot who turned off the aircraft's fuel switches.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed on June 12, 2025, shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, as the plane lost thrust from both engines just 32 seconds after takeoff. Around 260 people, 241 of the 242 passengers and crew on board, and 19 people on the ground when the aircraft struck a medical students’ hostel, were killed during the crash.

It was confirmed in the preliminary report, released a month after the crash, that the engines stopped after the fuel switches were moved from “run” to “cutoff.” The cockpit voice recorder captured one pilot asking why the engines were turned off, with the other denying responsibility, though the speakers were not identified.
The Final Investigation Report, containing conclusions and safety recommendations, will be published upon completion of the investigation in line with established international norms, the ministry said. The AAIB urges media organisations to exercise restraint and avoid premature speculation. Unverified reporting causes unnecessary public anxiety and undermines the integrity of an ongoing professional investigation.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Supreme Court sought a progress report and a report on the procedural protocol followed so far by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) in its probe into the Air India Ahmedabad crash of June 12, 2025, which killed 260 people in three weeks' time.
