At a time when box office numbers dominate conversations around every major release, even acclaimed filmmakers are not immune to the pressure of expectations. Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming partition-era romantic drama Main Vaapas Aaunga arrives with all the ingredients of a big-screen entertainer, a formidable cast led by Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari Wagh and Vedang Raina, alongside the celebrated musical duo of AR Rahman and Irshad Kamil.

Speaking exclusively to The Daily Jagran, Imtiaz Ali reflected on the pressure of box office expectations and how he views success in a time where numbers often overshadow the creative journey behind a movie.

Imtiaz Ali believes that no filmmaker is ever completely free from box office pressure. Even with a strong cast, positive buzz, and years of experience behind him, the celebrated director admits that the uncertainty surrounding a film’s box office performance remains a constant.

He said, "Well, I feel like every athlete truly competes with themselves, every film also truly competes with itself. The film does well according to how the film is, of course, it is relevant that uss waqt aur kya release ho raha hai, but what is most relevant is the quality of its own feature (sic)."

The filmmaker added, "So, I feel that Main Vaapas Aaunga is going to be released on the 12th of June, and if it merits it, then people will give it their best (sic)."

While box office pressure is inevitable, Imtiaz Ali isn't losing sleep over the competition. With Main Vaapas Aaunga arriving in theatres alongside Bharat Bhagya Vidhata, the filmmaker recently said that his film had already secured its June 12 release date before other projects joined in a conversation with the Free Press Journal. Remaining calm amid the crowded release calendar, Imtiaz Ali chose to place his faith in the film itself, stressing that every movie’s biggest test lies in how it connects with audiences rather than the number of films sharing its release date.
