National Science Day 2026: National Science Day is observed on February 28 every year. The date was chosen to honour the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ in 1928. The first National Science Day was observed in 1987 after the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) proposed its celebration.
Since then, schools, colleges, universities, and research institutions across the country organize science exhibitions, seminars, quizzes, and innovation challenges to inspire young minds.
National Science Day 2026: The Raman Effect
CV Raman’s discovery of the scattering of light is known as the Raman Effect. It was announced on February 28, 1928. The effect explains that when light passes through a transparent material, a small portion of the light changes its wavelength after interacting with the molecules of the substance.
Later, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for this discovery, becoming the first Asian to receive a Nobel Prize in science. This paved the way for many transformative discoveries in the technology industry.
National Science Day 2026: Theme
The Government of India will host the national-level celebration at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Through the Ministry of Science and Technology's Department of Science and Technology (DST), the day will be celebrated under the theme, “Women in Science Catalysing Viksit Bharat."
This year, the theme highlights the roles and contributions of women scientists in building a developed nation. More and more girls and women are encouraged to pursue careers in Science and Research through this celebration.
