National Science Day 2026: National Science Day is observed on February 28 every year. The date was chosen to honour the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ in 1928. The first National Science Day was observed in 1987 after the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) proposed its celebration. 

Since then, schools, colleges, universities, and research institutions across the country organize science exhibitions, seminars, quizzes, and innovation challenges to inspire young minds.

National Science Day 2026: The Raman Effect

CV Raman’s discovery of the scattering of light is known as the Raman Effect. It was announced on February 28, 1928. The effect explains that when light passes through a transparent material, a small portion of the light changes its wavelength after interacting with the molecules of the substance. 

Later, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for this discovery, becoming the first Asian to receive a Nobel Prize in science. This paved the way for many transformative discoveries in the technology industry. 

National Science Day 2026: Theme

The Government of India will host the national-level celebration at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. Through the Ministry of Science and Technology's Department of Science and Technology (DST), the day will be celebrated under the theme, “Women in Science Catalysing Viksit Bharat."

This year, the theme highlights the roles and contributions of women scientists in building a developed nation. More and more girls and women are encouraged to pursue careers in Science and Research through this celebration.

National Science Day 2026: India’s Scientific Achievements

Here are some noteworthy achievements of India in the field of Science and Technology.

1. Space Exploration

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has placed India among the leading space-faring nations. Chandrayaan-3, Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), Aditya-L1, etc are among the prominent achievements.

2. Nuclear and Atomic Research

India developed strong nuclear research programs over the years. Advancements in electricity generation and medical applications are part of these developments. 

3. Information Technology Revolution

India has emerged as a global IT hub. Technological advancements in software development, digital payments, and artificial intelligence have transformed daily life and boosted the economy.

4. Medical and Vaccine Innovation

Indian scientists played a major role in vaccine development and pharmaceutical production, especially during global health emergencies. Research advancements have strengthened the healthcare system and made medicines affordable worldwide.
