One of the most unusual run-outs seen in recent cricket happened during the opening match of the tri-series between India A and Sri Lanka A in Dambulla on June 9.
India A opener Priyansh Arya was looking in great touch and scoring freely before his innings came to an unexpected end. A mix-up with Ruturaj Gaikwad, followed by an unfortunate moment involving Sri Lanka A wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella’s left shoe, resulted in Arya being run out.
The incident took place in the 13th over of India A’s innings. On the previous ball, Gaikwad had smashed Ravindu Fernando for a six. The next delivery was pushed towards point, and the batters looked comfortable for a second run.
However, Arya was watching the ball while Gaikwad had almost completed the run at the other end. As the throw came in, Dickwella moved to collect it, but Arya’s bat appeared to get blocked by the wicketkeeper’s left shoe while he was trying to slide it inside the crease.
How Priyansh Arya got out?
At the same time, Gaikwad safely made his ground. Dickwella quickly threw the ball to the striker’s end, where Ravindu Fernando removed the bails. After checking multiple replays, third umpire Hemantha Boteju ruled Arya out.

The dismissal ended a promising knock from Arya, who scored 32 off 32 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six. India A were reduced to 69/3 after 13 overs, having already lost Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Prabhsimran Singh early.

While Arya could not carry on, Gaikwad made the most of an early lifeline. The right-hander went on to score his 21st List A century and played a key role in rebuilding the innings. Gaikwad struck 101 off 114 balls, including six fours and three sixes.
Interestingly, the Chennai Super Kings captain was not part of the original squad and was drafted in as a replacement for the injured Riyan Parag.
Gaikwad stitched a 150-run stand
Gaikwad also shared a crucial 150-run partnership with captain Tilak Varma for the fourth wicket. Varma played a calm knock, scoring 60 from 97 balls as he focused on building a stand after early dismissals.
Ayush Badoni's 24 off 18 balls cameo, and Suryansh Shedge, who remained unbeaten on 26 from just 14 deliveries, helped India A finish strongly. Their efforts took India A to a competitive total of 277/6 against Sri Lanka A.
