ICC T20 World Cup 2026: Ever since the inaugural edition in 2007, the T20 World Cup has witnessed it all, having travelled several continents, producing different title winners so far. The tournament has witnessed thrilling moments, the establishment of heroes and whatnot, yet one script has stubbornly refused to change.

In the nine different editions of the T20 World Cup, the hosts have welcomed the world, filled the stands, owned the conditions, but never lifted the trophy. Apart from legendary performances and historic outcomes, what has remained consistent is the curious "home jinx" — no host nation has ever lifted the T20 crown on its own soil.

With the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 set to conclude on March 8, the narrative stands on the brink of a dramatic change. With the defending champions India stepping in as hosts and early favourites, belief is louder than ever that history could finally bend. On the back of some outstanding success in the T20I format and a magnificent start to their campaign in the ongoing tournament, the co-hosts India remain ambitious in the title race. The question that lingers over this edition is simple but compelling: will the jinx endure once more, or is this the year the home team finally scripts their own fairytale?

On the back of dominating victories against the USA, Namibia and the arch-rivals Pakistan, India already have made it to the Super 8 stage after finishing at the top of Group A. The T20 World Cup 2026 is being held in India and Sri Lanka, with the latter also being in contention for the title.

Notably, India, the West Indies and England are the only teams to have lifted the T20 World Cup more than once (2 times each), while Pakistan, Australia and Sri Lanka have tasted success once. Under MS Dhoni's captaincy, India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in South Africa before the Rohit Sharma-led side added to the tally with a title success in the tournament's previous edition in 2024 in the Caribbean. South Africa (2007), England (2009), West Indies (2010), Sri Lanka (2012), Bangladesh (2014), India (2016), UAE & Oman (2021), Australia (2022), and USA & West Indies (2024) all staged the event, yet the trophy always travelled elsewhere.

Legends bat for India to break 'host nation curse' and create history

According to the former India batter Robin Uthappa, the Suryakumar Yadav-led Men in Blue have what it takes to break the curse in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. Uthappa, who was part of the MS Dhoni-led Indian team that won the inaugural edition of the multi-nation tournament in 2007, further cited how the Men in Blue had broken a similar curse in the ODI World Cup in 2011.

"We’ve broken the host curse before, with the Women’s World Cup, and I believe India can do it again. It’s possible when everything aligns: team unity, playing for each other, building camaraderie during the tournament, and sheer collective desire to win," Uthappa said on the 'JioStar Press Room'.

India stronger than ever

The former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan went on to say that the current side has a "great chance to defend the title." "This Indian team is extremely strong in terms of quality and depth, with multiple players competing hard for every spot. Compared to past eras, the options are far better, which is why India has a great chance to defend the title. There will always be a few concerns with any side, including this one, but if this team executes its skills to potential, it will be very difficult to stop India from retaining the T20 World Cup," Pathan said.
