Ahead of the implementation of the 8th Pay Commission, the government has issued a warning about a major cyber fraud targeting central government employees in the name of salary and pension calculations.

The alert was shared on the social media platform X, the cyber awareness handle of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). Authorities said several government employees are receiving fraudulent WhatsApp messages claiming to offer estimated salary details under the 8th Pay Commission.

According to the advisory, scammers are circulating messages asking employees to click on a link and download an APK file to check their revised salary under the 8th Central Pay Commission (8th CPC).

However, officials clarified that this is a scam. Once the APK file is installed, fraudsters gain remote access to the victim’s mobile phone. This can allow them to steal sensitive data, including banking credentials, and siphon money from bank accounts.

How the Scam Works:

  • Fake WhatsApp messages are sent to government employees.
  • The message promises salary calculation details under the 8th Pay Commission.
  • Victims are asked to download and install an APK file.
  • Once installed, the device is compromised, and financial details can be accessed by fraudsters.

The government has categorically stated that it does not send APK files or salary-related links via WhatsApp. Employees have been advised to rely only on official sources for information regarding salaries, pensions, or the 8th Pay Commission.
